At Newquay Education Trust we have a united Board of Directors who unselfishly give their time to make sure every student gets the best out of their time with us. They have a clear vision of making NET academies the best environments possible for young people to grow and develop, as well as keeping academies central to the community needs.

Sue Martin – Chief Executive Officer

Sue has been the Chief Executive Officer of Newquay Education Trust since April 2016. She is a National Leader of Education with many years of successful educational leadership experience including 17 years as Headteacher.  Prior to taking up the role of Head of Newquay Tretherras in 2007, Sue was Head of Plymouth High School, and prior to that role, she was a Deputy Head at Penair School in Truro.

A former Head of English and Drama, Sue ardently believes that schools have both the power and moral responsibility to shape children’s lives, enable them to achieve their dreams, and overcome disadvantage. She loves what she does and views schools as families who help each other become the best they can be.

Sarah Karkeek – Chair of Newquay Education Trust

A Governor with over 30 years of experience, Sarah has been in education all her working life, firstly as a teacher and school leader and then as the founding director of a childcare chain. She is a National Leader of Governance.

Sarah has two sons who were both educated at Newquay Tretherras and she believes that providing a good, rounded education is the key to a successful future for every young person, both personally and in their work choice.

Steve has been teaching for 35 years, 31 at Newquay Tretherras where he was a member of the school leadership team for 16 years. Since retiring in 2011 he has worked with local schools and is currently employed by NET as a Business Manager for Newquay Junior Academy.  He has a particular interest in school buildings/facilities and the impact they can have on staff and pupils-the best buildings can be transformative.

Steve feels that being a Director of NET has given him an opportunity to continue his association with the Academy and the young people of Newquay. In addition to his involvement with NET he is also a member of ACE (Atlantic Centre of Excellence). Other community involvement includes being a member of the Rotary Club of Newquay, Newquay Cricket Club, Newquay Hornets RFC and a Trustee of Trenance Cottages.

Geoff Brown

Geoff has served as councillor for Newquay since 2007 and since 2013 has been a Cornwall Council Cabinet Member for Communities. Prior to his retirement, he taught in Cornish schools for 30 years, latterly as Headteacher. He was also the volunteer Station Officer for the Newquay Coastguard Cliff Rescue team for 25 years. During this time, he was twice awarded the Chief Coastguard’s Commendation and received the Westcountry Television Man of the Year award for his work on the Kosovo charity appeal.

Since 2007, he has been a launching officer for the Newquay lifeboat and together with his wife, Chris, was awarded the RNLI Bronze Badge for our work on sea safety education.

Sean Dixon

Sean joined Newquay Education Trust in September 2015 after a short spell on the Newquay Tretherras Local Governing Body as a Parent Governor. He has been a doctor in the NHS since 1998 and since 2009 as a consultant surgeon.

Good governance, education and relentless objective scrutiny of performance are fundamental to his work. He hopes to use these skills to help the schools within the NET continue to set and achieve aspirational targets for performance and development.

Quality Assurance, systems management, data analysis, MABLE.

Nick Jenkin

After leaving Newquay Tretherras as a student Nick joined the Merchant Navy. During periods of leave he often helped out with the Duke of Edinburgh expeditions. After 8 years in the Navy he left to embark on a training course to become a Chartered Accountant. Following his training he moved into the NHS, where he has worked since 1995.Nick is currently Head of Finance at Kernow Clinical Commissioning Group.

Nick has 2 daughters, who have been educated at Newquay Junior Academy and at Newquay Tretherras.

Sebastian Parker

After attending Newquay Grammar and then Newquay Tretherras Sebastian travelled through Africa before studying Agriculture at Seale-Hayne on completion of his course he returned to farm at Callestick where he still farms and manufacturers ice cream.

Sebastian has four sons who have all attended Newquay Tretherras. He has been a director of NET since its formation and prior to that was a governor of Newquay Tretherras for 25 years.

Ashley Mann

As a community-based individual who has been fortunate to have been born in Newquay and educated through Newquay Junior and Newquay Tretherras Academy, Ashely has a real passion for giving back time and experience to the schools which have given him the opportunity to be where he is today. He is currently employed by South Western Ambulance Service as a Paramedic Operations Officer in charge of 30 staffs at Newquay Ambulance Station. Alongside his primary employment, Ashley is also a retained fire-fighter based at Newquay and long-standing helmsman and crew member of the Newquay lifeboat crew.

Ashley has gained a mass of knowledge and experience in the educational system along with the requirements to facilitate the running of a large school, since being a governor at Newquay Junior Academy. This is been further enhanced with the insight into teaching from his wife, a Head of Year at Newquay Junior and the day to day accounts at the sharp end from his two children who are currently being educated at Newquay Tretherras Academy. As an individual Ashley feels that he holds an array of skills which would enhance and be of benefit to the Directors of the NET, firstly holding the community values and future of his town at the forefront providing the best education and employment for the all.

Phil Mason

Phil has been a Governor and Director, since 2007. As Chair of governors he helped lead St Columb Minor Primary School in its transition to academy status and then helped lead the creation and development of the ACE multiple academy trust in Cornwall and Devon.As well as being a Director of Newquay Education Trust, Phil is the Chair of the St Columb Minor Local Advisory Board and Chair of the ACE Board of Directors. He has significant experience and skills in leadership, management, finance and property.

Phil holds a senior role at Cornwall Council as Service Director for Planning and Sustainable Development and has held a senior role in Local Government in Cornwall since 2004. Phil has children at St Columb Minor, Tretherras and Cornwall College. He is passionate that education is the foundation for the welfare and well-being of every child and he believes that his role is to make sure that there is continual improvement and that every child in every school matters.
